Background
Fred has 15 years experience in organic gardening and using solar power for heating. He super-insulated his cottage in Wales and added various solar thermal heating projects. Sandra has 20 years experience in organic gardening. Together we went on to learn about Agroforestry and have 10 years experience in Forest Gardening, having created a forest garden on a welsh hillside site 700ft above sea level and a second garden at 'The Romany Rest' in Prince Edward Island, Canada and a third at Red Sand Cottage Permaculture Site in Prince Edward Island.
Sandra has a background in environmental science and worked for 10 years as quality manager for two environmental science laboratories and three river intake protection stations. In Wales, UK, we created a local community-based business promoting produce grown locally or made locally from local ingredients. It started as a preserves business and then later expanded into a wholefood and fresh produce shop with a deli and cafe attached. We were active members of the 'Wholesome Food Association' and the business was affiliated to the WFA. Sandra was involved with local food initiatives and was a director of the 'Farmers' Market Network' before we left Wales bound for Canada!
On arrival in Canada, we immediately set about creating a permaculture site at 'The Romany Rest B&B', later moving to 'Red Sand Cottage'. Sandra is a PDC graduate and taught Introductory courses at the Romany Rest as well as hosting a number of group visits. We completed two energy-efficiency passive solar home retrofits, most recently the 15-month project at 'Red Sand Cottage'.
We ran a permaculture-based crafts business selling locally made craft items from largely local materials.
