Get Involved
There are various ways to get involved with the permaculture site and woodland conservation:
- Volunteer
- Bring Useful Materials like plants, seedlings, mulch
- Donate items such as bird boxes or trees
Why & How?
We do not charge for admission as we don't want lack of money to prevent anyone coming here to enjoy the site and woodland and learning a bit about permaculture. Workshops are run on a suggested $5 donation or free if needed. Please don't let lack of funds stop you from attending or visiting.
Conservation work here at Red Sand Cottage is carried out by ourselves as volunteers and by other volunteers. Please enquire if you would like to volunteer, there is always plenty to do!
Some funding comes from PEI Forestry under the Forest Enhancement Program.
We try to fund some of the conservation projects and site upkeep by the sale of crafts.
In addition, we often get asked if we accept donations. We can accept donations (and would be very glad to put them to good use) however, we are technically a 'business' so it is not possible for donors to claim tax relief on their donation. In addition, we need to declare any donation as taxable income (not a problem, just thought we'd mention it). You can donate by Paypal or credit card, see below.
A good solution is to donate an item, e.g. a bird box, bat box, tree seedling, etc., and in this way we can also support locals who make/grow such items sustainably. If you would like to donate an item on behalf of someone else (as a gift for Christmas, a birthday or anniversary), we can send a gift card and photograph to the person to tell them about the donation which was made on their behalf. Please see list below to order.
For larger items (e.g. a bench or picnic table) we can arrange to have a small engraved plaque to acknowledge your donation if you wish.
Of course, it's not just about money! We really appreciate your practical help & support, your advice, moral support and any other items that can be useful, e.g. wood chips, grass clippings, plants, tree seedlings and so on. If you have maple trees that produce a lot of unwanted seedlings, we'd be very glad of them and other types of seedlings.
We are grateful and thank you for any type of support you can give.

Large Bird Box
Locally made by 'Joe'. For a donation of $18 we will erect one of these lovely bird boxes in the woodland. Since the woodland is quite 'young' there are not so many dead standing trees ('snags') and therefore we need to erect bird boxes to provide a home for various types of birds.

Park Bench for Woodland with Engraved Plaque
Sorry no picture as we don't have a bench yet! However, upon receipt of your donation, we can purchase a bench and place it along the woodland walk and attach an engraved plaque in recognition of your gift. We realise that woodland walks can be tricky for some folks depending upon mobility. We are striving to make the woods (or as much as possible) accessible to all. Placement of benches would give welcome resting spots so that the walk could be taken in smaller portions.
